BLUE KNIGHT STARTING OVER

Miley was everything a Labrador should be.  She was lovely, she was kind, she was gentle.  She was a wonderful mother.  Miley was a “daddy’s girl”.  She adored Dan.  Miley was never meant to leave us, but in 2020, the pandemic hit, and isolated everyone.  My step-mother, a widow and alone, was isolated with her three cats and her dog.  I called one afternoon in the early summer, to ask how she was doing with the isolation, and she replied “as long as I have my cats and dog, Dutchess, I’m fine”.  Just days later, Dutchess, who was quite old,  died unexpectedly.  Vivian was crushed.  She “needed” a dog.  She wanted a dog.  She could not go looking for one, and the shelters were closed.  In her 80’s, she was suddenly alone, without the company of a dog, and distraught.  Dan and I looked at each other, and knew what we had to do.  We placed 10 year old Miley with her.  She lives close enough to us for us to visit Miley whenever we wanted, but clearly, Miley had a higher purpose than living out her last days with us.  Miley moved in with Vivian as if she had always lived there.  She loved the cats, and they were not afraid of her.  It was a wonderful match in desperate times.
